April Showers…

Spring Cleaning

After a long cold winter, spring has finally arrived! It’s time to have a look at all of those worn out collars, harnesses, leashes, clothing, bedding, carriers, toys, dishes and make some decisions – donate; toss; or keep.

There are many needy families out there with pets. Consider donating items that your pet is bored of. Cosmopawlitan has a donation bin for your reusable pet items and for pet food. Items will be delivered to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Clean and keep anything in reasonably good shape that is still in regular use. The rest can be replaced with something fresh for the new season. Like people, pets perk up when they get new things too!

Spring Showers

There’s nothing like a refreshing wash and haircut to help our pets feel clean and like new! Spring has been rainy and mucky and the perfect time for a dog bath!

Bathing your pet is great for bonding. Some dogs love getting bathed and others find it stressful. For a positive experience, parents can introduce the idea to their dogs (or cats) while they are young and keep it relaxing and fun. Reward generously with praise and yummy treats during and after the bath.

If your dog is very uncomfortable, start by wetting your dog’s paws only, on a weekly basis. After a few weeks, start to wash their legs as well. This will help your pup get use to the idea of washing. When it is time for the full bath, your dog will be more comfortable with water.

For those without the necessary equipment at home, try Cosmopawlitan’s self-serve bath. Whether you do it at home or somewhere else, remember to always keep it positive!

April 22 is Earth Day

Here are 5 tips on eco-friendly living with your pets:

1. Use biodegradable poop bags;
2. Use environmentally-friendly cat litter such as recycled newspaper, corn or pine (these are also safer for your pet since less chemicals are used);
3. Compost cat litter and dog poop;
4. Help reduce pet overpopulation by having your pet spayed or neutered (this is also healthier for your pet
5. Protect wildlife by keeping your dog leashed and your cat indoors.

The Goodness of Green Tripe

What is Green Tripe?

Tripe is the stomach lining of ruminating animals – cows, sheep, deer, goats and pigs. Bleached tripe is used in various human dishes, while green tripe makes a good pet food. Green tripe is unwashed, unbleached and in its most natural form thus has the highest nutritional value. It is green because it contains partially digested plant matter.

Benefits

Unlike processed food, green tripe is full of live enzymes and gastric juices which are beneficial to our pets. It is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, amino acids, probiotics, phytonutrients, lactic acid bacteria (lactobacillus acidophilus), protein, fiber and fat.

Although smelly to the human nose, green tripe is very appealing to dogs (and some cats). Adding tripe to your pet’s diet may help give a noticeably more lustrous coat, cleaner teeth and more energy. It helps stimulate appetite and aids digestion too.
