TTC: Easier (+ more stylish) on the Harbourfront

Here’s some interesting news that we caught off the Queens Quay Life blog:
TTC has a “Ride Now, Pay Later” program for the Eastbound 509 and 510 Harbourfront streetcars on Queens Quay at select stops during the summer weekends.

On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from Sunday, May 10 until Labour Day, Monday, September 7, TTC operators are not collecting fares at Harbourfront.

If you’re waiting for an eastbound streetcar on Queen’s Quay West at Bathurst Street, Dan Leckie Way, Lower Spadina Avenue, Rees Street, Lower Simcoe Street or York Street — or at the northbound platform at Queen’s Quay Station — you may board streetcars by either the front or centre door. You don’t have to pay a cash or token fare and the operators won’t give you a paper transfer.

Instead, you’ll pay when you leave the underground streetcar loop at Union Station.

Seen on the Transit Toronto blog:
If you’re a fan of TTC paraphernalia, you’ll want to catch the Harbourfront streetcar on Sundays. The TTC has resurrected vintage PCC streetcars to operate on the 509 route until September 6th. Historically, these streetcars ran on Toronto streets from 1938 to 1996.

Duckling at Cosmopawlitan

Cool! We were (sort of) mentioned in today’s Toronto Star:

As I biked along Queens Quay West last Sunday morning, I had the opportunity to help a mother duck get her six ducklings across the streetcar tracks and into the lake.

Thank you to the motorists and streetcar drivers who stopped for the ducks.

Thank you to the girls in the pet shop who gave me a box top and food for three ducklings I found five minutes later who got left behind, and needed to be carried to the lake.

Thank you to the passersby who stopped to help me reunite the baby ducks with their family when they ran away into the bushes.

And thank you to the maintenance man who helped me catch the one remaining duckling that just would not swim toward his family, and place him safely with them.

It was 45 minutes out of my day, but it brought strangers together and showed that people still care about animals, even when it is just one baby duck. It made for a happy Mother’s Day.

Colleen Arsenault, Toronto

Thanks to Colleen for taking the time help the family of ducks safely cross to the waterfront, and for re-uniting the lost ducklings that you found!

Duckling at Cosmopawlitan

Later that day, we found another duckling on the sidewalk… no doubt from the same flock. We released it into the harbour. We didn’t find the flock but the duckie was calling for mommy so we watched him for a while. The next day we saw the mother duck with her nine ducklings. We hope the one we released was part of the group!
